Phillip DeFranco is a performing trumpet artist in the New York City Metropolitan area. He has been playing trumpet since 1965.  After being awarded an NEA Fellowship, he received classical training at Manhattan School of Music during the 1970s, where he had the opportunity to study with the top trumpet players in the business. During the 1980s Phil played professionally in the southeast while playing trumpet with Nashville recording legend Lenny Dee at Lenny Dee's Den and Lenny Dee's Kings Inn, dinner clubs in the St. Petersburg Florida area. Phil then went on to cultivate a lucrative career as a software engineer at a major Wall Street firm after receiving additional educational credentials at New York University, and currently maintains an extensive performance schedule in the New York Tri-state area. He is currently an endorsing artist for NYTC by Possegger Bb Trumpets and Eclipse Cornets, performing on them exclusively. He also has an extensive array of vintage, post-war, and contemporary trumpets and Cornets in various keys and designs.  Additionally- Phil currently holds membership in Local 802 American Federation of Musicians (AFM), The International Trumpet Guild (ITG), and the North American Brass Band Association (NABBA).

2008 Updates

 

July 2008- Working on Master Super Chops with Jerome Callet.  The DVD is really great and very informative.  It also features Mac Gollehon doing some outstanding playing while demonstrating the embouchure set-up.  Here is a link to the Master Super Chops website.  Have finally received the 908 Harrelson Trumpet built on top of a Calicchio Ultra 3/7.

 

2007 Updates

 

November 2007- On the equipment scene- I am waitng on my Harrelson 908 which will be completed in 2007.  The base horn for the Harrelson 908 Conversion is a Calicchio 3/7 Ultra with a 6" Bell.  You can see the Calicchio Trumpet I sent to Jason Harrelson for the 908 conversion on my portfolio page.

Check my ensemble performance schedule below for the remainder of this year and next.  Princeton Brass Band  is comprised of successful college professors and other professional brass players.  We are an up and coming presence on the North American Brass Band scene and will be recording our first commercial CD in 2007 and participating at the North American Brass Band Association Competition (NABBA).  I am also taking the time to expand my horizons by working with jazz great Mac Gollehon

Friday, April 14, 2006, 8:00 PM: As part of the "Artists of the Island" series of performances, Phil will be performing with the "Brothers 2" Trumpet and Piano Duo, Phil will be playing "The Lovelock Trumpet Concerto for C Trumpet and Piano" by William Lovelock at St. Stevens Church, Staten Island New York.  This session will be recorded live for an upcoming CD, anyone interested in attending is welcome and can contact me via my Contact page for further details.

 

March 31st through April 1st: Phil will be appearing at the North American Brass Band Association Competition (NABBA) in Louisville Kentucky as Solo Cornet Player with the Princeton Brass Band under the direction of Dr. Stephen Arthur Allen.  At this event Phil will be premiering Leigh McKinney's newest creation, The Eclipse Bb Cornet.  Phil is soon to become the first endorsing artist for the Eclipse Cornet Line in the USA.  The cornet is soon to be delivered from the Eclipse Shoppe in the UK where it is being hand crafted by the artisan Leigh McKinney for Phil's visit to NABBA with the Princeton Brass Band.  Felix Vayser of the New York Trumpet Company was the driving force behind this effort and made it possible by bringing these horns into the USA from Europe where they are in high demand by many of the championship front row solo cornet players.
